Thomas N. Pierce letter, 1843 June 2.

Letter from Thomas N. Pierce, lawyer of Vicksburg, Miss., to Robert W. Carter of Warsaw, Va., concerning Pierce's legal activities on behalf of Carter, chiefly involving the acquisition of slaves and land. Pierce carried to the Supreme Court a case involving an earlier lien on some of the slaves held by the Union Bank of Madison, La., a landmark case as the laws of Louisiana were vague on a question between a party in Louisiana and one from another state. Pierce also comments on the worth of the notes of the Commercial and Rail Road Bank of Vicksburg.
